Learning techniques to learn
Learning to learn explains how you don't have to be an expert to be able to master a subject, in reality you only need study techniques that provide us with tools to improve our learning. Below I will write the techniques that most caught my attention.
Multisensory learning:
Oakley and Sejnowski mention that the creation of synaptic connections can increase from multisensory learning. There will be better learning if you see and hear instead of using only one sense. Learning and remembering will be easier because there will be more neural pathways for the brain to retrieve ideas.
The more you connect synapses from different parts of the brain, the more you can access the whole brain and take advantage of each of its capabilities.
Skim books first:
A quick read of a book, reviewing titles, images helps to have a general idea of what the book will be about, that way it will be easier to store the information in our memory.
This technique has been verified personally, since for the realization of this blog it was the technique that was used, first titles, subtitles, some lines and the image were reviewed, and then read carefully what most caught our attention.
Diversify your studies
Diversifying studies better connects what is being learned with more neural pathways, which helps to learn better. The authors of the book mention three ways to diversify our studies.
The first tells us that varying the places of study is helpful, because studying a topic in a variety of settings will make it easier to remember because the topic will not be associated with any specific setting. For example, it will be useful to study at home or some other times in a coffee shop or in the library, so you will remember the subject anywhere without much difficulty.
Regarding the second point, it is mentioned that a good strategy for long-term recall is to integrate different study problems.
The last technique to diversify the study tells us that we can vary by studying something different, that is to say that we acquire a completely different subject, in this way we will generate new knowledge and we could even be more creative.
Exercise Between Study Sessions
As we saw earlier also in the brain rules, exercise promotes the growth of neurons, which improves our cognitive performance, inserting exercise while studying will make learning more effective. While you study English you could take a few moments to go for a run, do some squats or do some yoga, so we will learn more and stay fit.
Get enough sleep
Like the previous point, we have seen in brain rules, as well as in this reading that getting enough sleep is essential, specifically the authors of this book comment that sleep serves to strengthen synaptic connections, the organization of information and eliminate the toxins that our brain generates while we are awake. An adequate sleep allows us to advance better in our learning.
Alternate between focus and rest
The authors talk about ways of thinking and in this they explain that alternating periods of intense concentration with moments of mental rest will improve your ability to solve problems. So when you feel very overwhelmed or you feel that you are no longer making progress, take a break to breathe and relax your mind.
Avoid distractions and multitasking
When we eliminate distractions and avoid multitasking, our concentration improves, we have greater focus, we facilitate our learning process and therefore we remember better, which is why it helps our memory.
These are the techniques that caught my attention the most, I hope that my way of summarizing them will help you so that you can take one of them and optimize your learning.
Thanks for your time, take care and we will be reading next week. 😁✌🏻
